⊕ Go through the steps below to create your story…

1. Choose two characters to be in your story…

  • A baker
  • The Mayor of London
  • The bucket gang
  • A rat
  • Samuel Pepys
  • A robber
  • A sailor
  • A young girl

In 1666, they had fire engines – pulled by horses. Unfortunately, the hose had not been invented! So they had to use gangs of people to pass buckets of water from the fire engine to the blaze.

2. Where does the story start?

  • The baker’s shop on Pudding Lane
  • The Mayor of London’s house
  • The docks (Some of the ships here are full of gunpowder for the Dutch War!)
  • Grey’s Inn (Robbers are known to hang out here!)

3. What can your character see, hear, and smell?

  • The whole street is on fire
  • People are leaving
  • The gunpowder ships are exploding
  • The Mayor is still asleep
  • Criminals are stealing people’s stuff
  • Rats are running from the fire

4. Write the story. Will your characters run for safety or will they stay and try to put the fire out?
